What is a school policy?

"An effective policy should provide a sound basis upon which more detailed actions and plans can be layered. It should give members of staff an indication of what their role might be in implementing it. Most importantly it should provide a united approach that distinguishes your school." NAHT Guide to Writing Policy.

By setting the various goals and assigning the proper authorities that enable school governance and management, school policies make clear to staff, students, parents and the community exactly what educators are accountable for.

School policy helps professionals govern in an orderly fashion. Since every school policy affects a child's education, each decision that is made is carefully considered by the Governing Body.

Types of School Policy

For convenience, the Hellesdon High School policies listed opposite are divided into two types of Whole School Policy - depending on whether they are to do principally with Administration and Governance, or whether they more directly affect students and community - and those more specifically dealing with staff issues.

It is appreciated there there is some overlap in this categorization - all policies should be listed, so please check the other categories if you can't find the one you're looking for.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL OUR POLICIES ARE CURRENTLY BEING REVIEWED FOR EQUALITY IMPACT ASSESSMENT. HARD COPIES OF POLICIES IN DIFFERENT FORMATS OR IN A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE MAY BE OBTAINED FROM THE HELLESDON HIGH SCHOOL OFFICE ON REQUEST.

featured policy: SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN (excerpt)

Purpose

The purpose of Hellesdon High School’s Safeguarding Policy is to ensure every child who is a registered student at the School is safe and protected from harm. This means the School will always work to:

  • Protect students from maltreatment
  • Prevent impairment of students’ health or development
  • Ensure that students grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
  • Undertake that role so as to enable students to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully.

This policy gives clear direction to staff, volunteers, visitors and parents/carers about the expected behaviour and legal responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all students at the School.

Introduction

The School fully recognises the contribution it can make to protect children from harm and supporting and promoting the welfare of all children who are registered students at the School. The elements of this policy are prevention, protection and support.
This Policy applies to all students, staff, parents/carers, Governors, volunteers and visitors.

The School’s Ethos

Hellesdon High School will establish and maintain an ethos where students feel secure, are encouraged to talk, are listened to and are safe. Students at the School will be able to talk freely to any member of staff or regular visitor to the School if they are worried or concerned about something.

All staff and regular visitors will, either through training or induction, know how to recognise a disclosure from a student and will know how to manage this. Promises will not be made to any student and secrets will not be kept. Every student will know what their chosen adult will have to do with whatever they have been told.

Throughout the curriculum we will provide activities and opportunities that will equip students with the skills they need to stay safe. This will also be extended to include material that will encourage students to develop essential life skills.

At all times the School will work in partnership and endeavour to establish effective working relationships with parents, carers and colleagues from other agencies.
