U16 Basketball: victory for Angels

Hellesdon AngelsBasketball fixtures have started! The Hellesdon Angels have been training hard, and had their first league match away against Sprowston on 20 October.

The Angels played with confidence from the start. All defended well, and made the most of scoring opportunities. Rio Topley rebounded brilliantly, and was top scorer with 12 points. Stevie Beckett scored some excellent outside shots.

Jess Clegg has worked hard on improving her ‘fake & drive’ and scored some good lay-ups. Charlotte Williams had a good game, driving bravely to the basket. Jess and Katie Light made life very difficult for Sprowston’s players by putting them under lots of pressure in defence.

The final score was 41-14 to us! A very pleasing start. Many thanks to parents and friends who came along to give their support, and thanks to the Angels for behaving so sensibly on a rather eventful minibus journey…

Angel of the Match: Rio Topley. A very difficult decision because it was such a good team effort… but Rio gets it for rebounding with such determination.

Team: Charlotte Williams; Maisie Cropley; Sofie Middleton; Stevie Beckett; Daisy Moore; Jess Clegg; Rio Topley; Katie Light; Rosie Beel; Gemma Hawes

The next game, against Notre Dame, will be tough! It’s at HOME on Monday 7 November. Everyone is invited to come and support us!

Sponsored Walk

high heels not recommended

Wear sensible shoes!

The sponsored walk will take place on Friday 21 October: the last day of this half term. This is a wonderful community event where the whole School gets together with a common goal. It is also a great experience for everybody to celebrate our Norfolk heritage at one of the county’s beauty spots, while enjoying a 5-6 mile walk.

Please would all parents/carers ensure that their child has returned a signed permission slip, without which s/he will not be able to take part.

Students will come to school at the normal time, in their own sensible clothes, suitable for the time of year – and sturdy footwear! The theme is ‘Walking for Macmillan’, so students are invited to wear the colour green and/or a silly hat to support the charity.

It’s really important to bring a water bottle, and to keep drinking along the way. If pupils take medication they must remember to bring it with them and be responsible for taking it.

Students requiring a school packed lunch must order it from the canteen by Tuesday 18 October, and collect it before the 8:30 registration on Friday. This is free for those who have free school meals, or £2.05 to other students.

Tutors, mentors and local staff will be walking with the pupils. We expect the highest standards of behaviour from everyone throughout the walk.

The route will be signposted, and orange juice, water and first aid will be available at each checkpoint. Some will also have toilets. The circular walk should take about 3hrs. At the end, students will board a bus back to HHS, which should arrive before 2.50pm.

If pupils arrive back at School before the bell they should wait in the Hall until the bell goes.

The money raised this year will go to Macmillan Nurses and a small donation to our partner school in India. Please support your child by sponsoring them, though in the context of family finance being under some strain.

Enjoy the walk, everybody!

Open Evening for Year 6

HHS welcomed prospective pupils and their parents on the evening of 6 October, giving a taste of life at Hellesdon High.

Following an introductory talk, noting why 2012 is such a great time to be joining our Year 7, the guests followed a stamper trail around the School, taking in the wealth of subjects offered at HHS.

Among many other activities, the Year 6 pupils were challenged to solve a Cluedo mystery featuring Drama students, edit a film and try interactive poetry in English, create their own ‘Wanted’ posters in ICT, sample food prepared by students in Food Tech, and identify suspects over a video link-up… in French. >> see MFL blog

Our visitors had a fun and informative evening, whose success was thanks in large part to the fantastic team of student volunteers who came back to School in the evening to help out, alongside their teachers. Thank you for doing a tremendous job.

Basketball season commences

Hellesdon AngelsThe Hellesdon Angels are training hard at the moment and are looking forward to some competitive games this season. Support from parents, staff and friends is always welcome!

The under-14 team (Years 8 & 9) will play its league matches from January 2012, but will be involved before then in a tournament on Monday 21 November 2011.

The U16 Angels start their league campaign on Tuesday 11 Oct (awaiting final confirmation) at home against Stalham. The next match will be at Sprowston on Thursday 20 October.

The teams will qualify for the semi-finals if we come 1st or 2nd in our league. We would then play against 2nd or 1st place teams from the Norwich South League.

Training: Wednesdays after school, unless a game is scheduled.
All team players are expected to attend training.
Shooting: Tuesday lunchtimes (optional)

Please let me know if you are unavailable or about any problems.
Good luck this season! Enjoy your basketball!
